8 Rules To A Better Life

Thursday, December 20, 2012

Pinterest. The site where millions of people live vicariously through pictures. But it isn't just that. I have found great comfort and laughter in words, phrases, and pictures there. On Nebraska's first snow storm of the year, my day was consumed with "pinning". This one especially stuck out to me.

Mildred & Bernice

Thursday, December 6, 2012

'Tis the season folks. What's on your wish list? Do you know what should be? The simple yet extraordinary pieces from the jewelry line Mildred & Bernice. With the combination of the deep warm wood shades and geometric shapes, this jewelry needs to be at the top of your list.
Ashley, designer of the line, is a former Alpha Phi and was gracious enough to have a trunk show here at Alpha Phi leaving me lusting for more! Find these unique pieces like my favorites below and much more at etsy. Oh and did I mention there is free shipping through the holidays?

Remember this statement piece from my last post?
"All of my pieces are handmade and formed around the wood grain which enables your piece to be unique and one of a kind! This process of love starts from carving each piece individually followed my many stages of sanding and buffing. Oil is then applied to bring out the richness of wood grain, then three layers of a micro-crystalline wax are added to help
with water resistance."

College Fashionista Internship

Wednesday, December 5, 2012

In the midst of dead week preparing for finals, I received some exciting news. I have been chosen as the Style Guru for UNL through CollegeFashionista. I am very eager and excited to be working with CollegeFashionista and I will be sure to keep you all up to date with what is to come, so stay posted! Below is my mock trial for the internship featuring my friend and fellow blogger, Libby Lemke.
To learn more about CollegeFashionista and what I will be doing this Spring, click here.

FUR, FLORAL, FASHIONISTA O MY! Nebraskan fashionista, Libby Lemke, was spotted wearing three of the biggest trends this season: faux fur, floral pants, and chambray.
CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing?
Libby Lemke: A chambray button up from J-Crew, floral pants and brown booties from target, and a faux fur vest.
CF: What are your favorite trends this season?
LL: My favorite trends are embellished collars, combat boots, loafers, and denim shirts.
CF: Who or what inspires your style?
LL: There really isn’t a specific person; I just like classic layering pieces that are very versatile so I can mix with different things in my wardrobe.
CF: Being in sorority, there are many socials, what is your go to look for a formal?
LL: I like to go with a simple dress then really glam it up with bold statement accessories.
CF: What is your one fashion item you can’t live with out?
LL: Right now it would have to be my denim button down from J-Crew, I wear it all the time!
How To: One would think that the combination of faux fur, floral pants, and chambray all sound a bit too distracting to wear all together. It may even sound like your classic over-accessorizing dilemma. But ladies, it is possible to put these big trends together in a chic and effortless way without looking like you’re trying too hard to be the next Carrie Bradshaw. Now, I’m not saying it’s an easy task, but once you master the technique of blending, you can be bolder in your fashion endeavors too. It’s fun and feminine to dress up your floral pants with other prints and textures. Adding a fur vest is the perfect way to add texture and dress it up. The chambray jacket underneath is simple enough to allow you to add the fur vest; it gives you a more effortless look, like a white tee would similarly do. Pair your ensemble with some ankle booties and voila, you’ve become a fashionista!

Polka Dots and Peplums

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

Happy Tuesday guys, today is a more chipper Tuesday than most since today was my last day of classes until next week AND in an hour I will be heading home!! ahhhh home. There is so much warmth and comfort in that word. With the combination of the autumn weather and the holidays beginning, this truly is my favorite time of the year. There is that slight chill and crisp feeling in the air, the aroma of homemade apple cider, and the oh so so needed quality time to be spent with my family.
Once again the Nebraska weather has decided to change its mind, but hey I am not complaining. This past weekend and today have been beautiful. My fingers are crossed I can keep that winter coat still shoved in my closet a bit longer.
Maxi skirts have been one of my favorite turn-to pieces this fall. They are effortlessly chic, and are easily capable of going from day to night. And if you haven't noticed the peplum craze this fall you've clearly been locked in a closet.  From dresses, skirts, and tops. I snatched up this peplum top in Colorado, such a classic piece.
and I never thought I would say this, but I am loving skulls lately...who would have thought!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving guys, Gobble till ya Wobble!! ;)

Chin up

Friday, November 16, 2012

Well this week sort of well, sucked. I am not trying to throw another pity party, Lord knows I've thrown three too many this week. My thoughts and my over thinking consumed me and led me doubting who I was as a person. When you start to doubt yourself, you begin to doubt everything in your life. I am so thankful to be surrounded by such wonderful friends. One especially who lives a life full of purpose and meaning, and who shares that purpose and meaning with others. This friend shared a special quote with me, "Darling, the world is not really against you, the only thing thats against you is yourself". There is so much truth in that sentence. It's time to keep my chin up put on my spike and stud combat boots, take this world on and find the beauty in the ugliest of days.

Studs, spikes, and leather are beginning to appear everywhere. From bags, clothing, shoes, and accessories. The trend is spiking, turning duds into studs. Think the look of spikes and leather is just for biker babes? Add a soft sweater or top to tone the tough chick into tough chic. For days where the sun isn't so bright, throw on a pair of tights!

lace and rays

Wednesday, October 3, 2012

and I made it... to Wednesday night. And so did you if you are reading this. I managed to pull my first all-nighter of college this week. Leaving me exhausted, but hopefully also with an A. Today was just one of those days where even though I was sleep deprived to the max, the beyond beautiful weather kept me smiling. I took some time to relax and appreciate today. Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder.
While letting the beauty of the day sink in, we had a bounce house set up in my backyard. So naturally me and friend had to test it out. Besides the sweating and the racing heart, it was a moment where you just felt alive. Such an incredible feeling, one that should happen far more than it does. We really all could use more of these days.

A do or don't

Sunday, September 16, 2012

Hi everyone! Sorry I have been slacking on my posts, but I am excited about my upcoming plans for the blog, so make sure to stay tuned!

Cropped tops. This belly bearing trend was everywhere this summer. The hardest thing for girls to figure out is how exactly to pull it off. I suggest contrasting the top with a piece that won't show so much skin, like my high waisted maxi skirt. As long as the belly button isn't showing, the crop top is perfectly lady-like. For cooler days add a jean jacket or chambray jacket.

Minty Fresh

Friday, August 17, 2012

HELLLO guys! So even though I have been locked in my sorority house all week, I have been crazy busy with recruitment. With recently moving into my beautiful house with all of my best friends, I can't help but feeling unbelievably blessed. Especially since new babies are on the way! I cannot wait to get to get to know all of the new members of Alpha Phi, it is going to be such an incredible year. With school starting Monday and summer ending, ends some of my favorite fashion trends. However, with some of these pieces, I am not ready to put them away quite yet... Mint green hue was everywhere this summer. The cool fresh hue is flattering to almost every skin tone and is a great color to mix with other fabrics like lace, silk, or chiffon. Be careful not to overload in the minty color and be sure to choose small accessories to balance out the mint. If you are afraid of color like in my last post, try out this soft pastel. However, I once again attempt rocking another fashion challenge. High waist printed pants. Two challenges in one. I think the biggest worry for women on this look is that men won't find it attractive. They don't necessary make our ASSets look "sweep me off my feet" ready, but with a few tips you can try the print pants in a more alluring way. You want a top that is a going to show a little more skin. For this look, I wore a transparent top to add a bit more appeal. Add a pair of pumps and your ready! Now if you are still unsure, heres a little inspiration from BJ.
“Girls don’t dress for boys; they dress for themselves & each other. If girls dressed for boys, they’d walk around naked.”

Well put Betsey, well put.

the power you're supplying, it's ELECTRIFYING

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

Happy Tuesday everyone!  Even though it is only Tuesday, the week is just flying by. Tomorrow is my last day with the kids I nanny (I'm heartbroken), and Thursday I have to say goodbye to my family and my three best friends (my two older sisters and my puppy, Gilmore) and head back to Lincoln for school and RUSH! A completely bittersweet feeling.  I am absolutely ecstatic to head back to UNL and move into my beautiful big white house with all my sorority sisters, but saying goodbye is always the hardest part. On a bright note, literally, I wanted to share one of my favorite trends of summer. NEON. This electrifying hue has been highlighting the streets and runways since the spring. The ways you can rock neon are simply endless. Whether you just want to just carry an electric pink cross-body purse or maybe a pair of fluorescent green earrings everyone should have at least one piece that is electrifying. Many women are confused with the thought of wearing the loud hues. Below is my no fear neon look, with a bit of color blocking in a sophisticated and fun way! Even though I'm wearing a full on neon romper with tangerine heels, I simplified the outfit with a neutral clutch and simple earrings.

I am obsessed with rompers, what drew me to this one believe it or not wasn't the color, but the low dip in the front with the lace details and the open back. Have fun with neon, and also don't be afraid to double up on the neon either!
